Shamar LaQuan James Brown, 34, was shot and killed on the evening of December 16, 2021, near Second Street and Bond Street in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Police found him with a gunshot wound about 8:30 p.m.; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives from the Elizabeth Police Department and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office focused their investigation on another Elizabeth resident, later identified as Deshon Fleming.
Authorities charged Fleming in February 2022 with first-degree murder and two counts of illegal weapons possession and sought him as a fugitive until his arrest on March 30, 2022, at the Flora Motel in Elizabeth by Elizabeth PD and ATF agents. In May 2024, a judge sentenced Fleming, then 38, to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison for aggravated manslaughter, with a requirement to serve at least 85 percent of the term before parole eligibility. Memorials online remember Brown as a life lost to gun violence.
If anyone knew Shamar, was in that neighborhood that night, or has information about what led to the shooting, please come forward.
