Eliezer Martinez, Jr., 30, was shot and killed in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in the early morning hours of June 22, 2021. Police were called for shots fired on the 400 block of Elizabeth Avenue shortly before 1:30 a.m. and found Martinez and another man with serious gunshot wounds. Martinez was taken to Trinitas Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead shortly before 2:00 a.m.; the other victim was treated at University Hospital in Newark and later released.

A multiagency investigation involved the Union County Homicide Task Force, the Elizabeth Police Department, the Union County Police Department Ballistics Unit, and the Union County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit. Three people from Elizabeth were arrested in connection with the shooting: Isaiah Turner (17 at the time), Kadir Epps (19), and Nasir Semmons (20). All three were ultimately sentenced on May 19, 2023, in relation to the violent encounter that led to Martinez’s death.
