Dysheem Bruton, 27, was fatally shot on April 30, 2021, while walking on Saint Mary Street in Burlington City, New Jersey. He was taken to Virtua Willingboro Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A 10-year-old boy was also unintentionally shot in the foot during the same incident.

Authorities quickly named a suspect, 20-year-old Nicholas Wahl, who lived on the same block where the shooting occurred. Charges were filed against Wahl within 24 hours as he fled toward South Carolina. Wahl was arrested on May 5, 2021, at a relative’s apartment in Greensville, South Carolina, by the U.S. Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force, then extradited to New Jersey and lodged in the Burlington County Jail in Mount Holly.

In August 2021 a grand jury returned an indictment charging Wahl with murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. The motive remained under investigation following the indictment.
