On a Saturday night in June 2020, 30-year-old Roobino Philemon of West Orange, New Jersey, was fatally shot in Bridgewater. Philemon, an Occupational Therapy Assistant, had gone with another person to a Bayberry Road home for a birthday party but was told at the door by homeowner George A. Bease that they were not welcome. After they returned to their car and stopped briefly on Foothill Road near Bayberry Road, Bease approached the vehicle and again told Philemon to leave. At that point 33-year-old Hafeez A. Brown of Linden walked to the rear of the car and fired multiple times into it. Philemon was struck by a single bullet, was moved to the back seat by his companion, and was taken to a trauma center after police rendered aid; he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police later secured the Bayberry Road residence hosting the party; five people emerged and were taken into custody. Officers recovered two firearms, ammunition, and a large quantity of marijuana at the scene. Hafeez A. Brown was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and two counts of illegal firearms possession. George A. Bease was arrested on a weapons charge tied to a controlled dangerous substance offense.
