On the evening of January 22, 2020, Tyshun Kearney, a 30-year-old Black man, was fatally shot outside a barbershop in Elizabeth, New Jersey, near the corner of Jackson Avenue and Bond Street. Officers arriving after reports of gunfire found Kearney with multiple gunshot wounds; he was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
Investigators from the Union County Homicide Task Force, the Elizabeth Police Department, the Union County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit, and the Union County Police Department Ballistics Unit worked the case. Police identified two Elizabeth residents, Charles Leach, 38, and his nephew Bashir Pearson, 22, as suspects. Officers in the area detained a man who matched one suspect description, surveillance footage showed two men fleeing and discarding handguns, and weapons later recovered were linked by ballistics testing to the shooting.
Does anyone in Elizabeth have information about that evening or remembers seeing activity near Jackson Avenue and Bond Street around 6:55 p.m. on January 22, 2020?
