Steven Flores, 19, was shot and killed shortly after midnight on December 23, 2018, near 61st Street and Park Avenue in West New York, New Jersey. The shooting followed an altercation that spilled out of a basement party. Officers found Flores with a gunshot wound to his upper body; he was taken to Jersey City Medical Center and pronounced dead at about 1:00 a.m. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the neck and the manner of death was ruled a homicide. Another person was wounded but survived with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit led the probe with assistance from West New York, Union City, and North Bergen police. Witnesses at the party reported that a man exited a black car, approached Flores, shot him, and fled. On January 4, 2019, an 18-year-old from West New York — who was 17 at the time of the shooting — was arrested and charged with murder, weapons counts, and aggravated assault; his name was not released because he was charged as a juvenile.

If anyone attended that party or has information about the person who exited the black car, please come forward.
