A neighborhood cookout at Brandywood Apartment Complex in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, turned deadly on the evening of September 24, 2017. What began as a verbal dispute between two men escalated into a larger brawl, and 31-year-old Taufeeq Mitchell was fatally shot when a 29-year-old man from Mays Landing opened fire into the crowd. Mitchell was pronounced dead at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Campus.
Three other people were also struck: Laquine Demby was critically injured, while Glynda Newman and Tyjuan O’Neal suffered non-life-threatening wounds and were treated and released. Children were present at the gathering when the shooting occurred, which prompted an investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Hamilton Township Police Department.
An arrest followed and the shooter was indicted on multiple charges, including Mitchell’s murder and the attempted murder of Laquine Demby. Does anyone who lived near Brandywood Apartments in 2017 remember the cookout that night or have information about what led up to the fight?
