Anthony Gregory, 29 and a resident of Salem, was fatally shot after a dispute outside Super Discount Liquors on East Main Street in Penns Grove on March 12, 2017. The altercation began as a verbal argument and escalated into a melee during which Gregory suffered a fatal gunshot wound; another man was also wounded. Emergency responders went to the scene but Gregory’s injuries proved too severe. The Salem County Prosecutor’s Office and the Penns Grove Police Department opened an investigation and treated it as the town’s first homicide of the year.

Authorities identified 28-year-old Eddie M. Webb-Beavers as the primary suspect and obtained a warrant charging him with murder, attempted murder, and weapons offenses. Webb-Beavers was located and arrested in Wilmington, Delaware, by the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force on April 5, 2017, and was later extradited to New Jersey to face the charges. The shooting had a deep impact on Gregory’s family and the community.
