On the evening of December 26, 2016, a shooting on the 600 block of East 3rd Street in Plainfield, New Jersey, left two people wounded. One victim, 18-year-old Manuel Berrios, a former student of South Plainfield High School, was taken to a nearby hospital and died after emergency surgery on December 27, 2016. The second victim survived following surgery.

The Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force, the Plainfield Police Department and the Union County Police Department investigated the fatal shooting. Friends and family remembered Berrios as a good person, and a GoFundMe was set up to help with funeral expenses. Authorities have not publicly identified suspects or announced arrests in the case.
