On November 3, 2016, a daylight shooting on the front porch of a two-family home on Cleveland Avenue in Orange, New Jersey, left one-year-old Marcus Milien dead. Marcus was on the porch with family when a gunman approached and opened fire; the toddler and his 21-year-old uncle Morlens Milice were killed as others tried to flee inside. Two additional people were wounded, identified in reports as the child’s father and a 15-year-old boy.

Authorities later identified and arrested 28-year-old Stevenson Valentin of Maplewood during a traffic stop in Newark. He was charged with two counts of murder, two counts of aggravated assault and weapons offenses, held on $1 million bail and remanded to the Essex County Correctional Facility. No motive has been made public.
