Shavel Monegan, 29, was shot and killed shortly after 1 a.m. on September 6, 2008, while standing with a group of people in the 7000 block of South Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Someone approached the group and opened fire; the crowd scattered and Monegan was struck multiple times. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The shooting was one of five separate firearm homicides during a roughly 12-hour span across the South Side that day, with incidents in Englewood, Auburn-Gresham and near the Altgeld Gardens housing complex. The violence highlighted persistent gun-related homicides in Chicago during 2008 despite the city’s handgun ban at the time. No arrest was made in Monegan’s shooting, leaving the case unresolved and his family without closure.
