On the night of May 18, 2015, 29-year-old Michael Thompkins was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a second-floor hallway of his apartment building at the Oakwood Plaza housing complex on Parker Road in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He was taken to Trinitas Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead a short time later. Police had responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 10 p.m.
Investigators later identified the suspect as Thompkins’ cousin, 22-year-old Todd West. Officials said the motive remained unclear and that the killing did not appear to be related to gang activity or drugs. West was also linked to a June 25, 2015 shooting spree in Elizabeth that killed three people and seriously injured a fourth; he fled to Pennsylvania and was arrested in Allentown on July 6, 2015. A New Jersey grand jury returned an indictment in December 2016 charging West in the Thompkins killing along with the other victims.
If anyone knew Michael Thompkins or has information about the May 18, 2015 shooting, please come forward.
