Mark J. Matuszewski was 20 when he was last seen on September 23, 1991, while working in the Alaskan commercial fishing industry. He was aboard the crabbing vessel Bering Empire near Attu Island, one of the westernmost islands in the Aleutians, when he fell overboard and was not recovered. He was described as having black hair, hazel eyes, standing five feet nine inches and weighing about 165 pounds, and was reportedly wearing oilskins at the time.
The incident was reported to the Alaska State Troopers as an accident at sea. The remote location and the harsh conditions of the Bering Sea made immediate rescue efforts extremely difficult, and no final recovery is described.
Did anyone who worked on or near the Bering Empire in September 1991 ever hear additional details about what happened that night?
