In the evening of October 13, 2014, 17-year-old Joell N. Burton was found in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens in Franklin Township, New Jersey, with a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers arrived after a 9-1-1 call at about 9:12 p.m.; Burton was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and pronounced dead.
Minutes later, police received a second 9-1-1 call about a stabbing on nearby Victor Street. There, 19-year-old Dequan S. Rogers of Franklin Township was found with stab wounds to his upper torso and arm. Investigators linked the two incidents to a confrontation between Burton and Rogers near Fuller Street and Route 27.
Rogers was arrested, treated for his injuries, and held in the Somerset County Jail. He was charged with first-degree murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a handgun, and a grand jury returned an indictment in March 2015. Did anyone in the area witness the altercation near Fuller Street and Route 27 or come forward at the time with information?
