Investigator John D. ’Jack’ McLaughlin, 38, was shot and killed on April 20, 1995, in Haddon Heights, New Jersey while serving a search warrant tied to a child abuse probe. McLaughlin was a recent hire at the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, assigned to investigate child abuse, and a former member of the U.S. Air Force Security Police.
Officers entered a Sylvan Drive home to serve the warrant on a 38-year-old suspect accused of molesting a niece. The suspect opened fire; McLaughlin was fatally wounded and Detective Richard Norcross was shot multiple times but survived. Patrolman John Norcross, Richard’s brother, was also shot and killed as the suspect fired from inside the house. A 14-hour standoff followed, with continued gunfire and tear gas before the suspect surrendered.
McLaughlin was survived by his wife and two daughters. If anyone knew Investigator McLaughlin or was in Haddon Heights that day and has information, please share what you remember.
