Trooper Carlos M. Negron, 29, was killed on the morning of May 7, 1984, after stopping to assist what appeared to be a disabled van on the New Jersey Turnpike in East Windsor Township. As he approached the vehicle at about 8:12 a.m., occupants James Edward Daniels and Lenell Hutchinson opened fire. Trooper Negron was struck multiple times, returned fire, but was transported to a nearby medical center and pronounced dead at 9:35 a.m.
Daniels and Hutchinson fled, carjacked another vehicle and led officers on a high-speed pursuit that ended when the stolen van crashed; both suspects were killed in the crash. No arrests were made in connection with Trooper Negron’s death. The firearm used in the shooting was later potentially linked to two other homicides in New York.
Trooper Negron was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who had served with the New Jersey State Police for just over two years and was survived by his wife and 11-month-old son. Does anyone have information about the incident or remembers details from that day that could add to the record?
