On the evening of November 5, 2022, gunfire in the 4600 block of Staghorn Drive in the Colony Oaks neighborhood of Virginia Beach left 21-year-old Richard Lamont Cantey dead. Officers found Cantey inside a sedan with gunshot wounds; he was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. He was from Norfolk and known to friends and family as Rick Rock, who loved basketball and was developing a music career.

A neighbor later said they heard three pops and a woman screaming before discovering Cantey wounded. Within days, police arrested two teenage boys, 15 and 17, in connection with the shooting. The 17-year-old was charged with felony murder, attempted robbery, and possession of a stolen vehicle; the 15-year-old was charged with felony murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Both were held at the Virginia Beach Juvenile Detention Center and their identities were withheld because they are juveniles.
