On Tuesday afternoon, September 13, 2022, a gunshot in the 2600 block of Chickahominy Road in Toano, Virginia, drew James City County police and firefighters to a man suffering a gunshot wound. The man, identified as 38-year-old Alfred Lamont Johnson of James City County, was pronounced dead at the scene. Loved ones described him as sweet and kind-hearted.

Within days investigators identified a person of interest. Lee Rondell Richardson of Newport News was arrested on September 22, 2022, and initially charged with second-degree murder, held without bond at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail. Nearly three years later a jury convicted Richardson on June 12, 2025, of first-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony; he remained in custody awaiting sentencing scheduled for September 15, 2025.

Anyone who knew Alfred Lamont Johnson, his movements that afternoon, or who has information about the shooting is asked to come forward.
