On the evening of June 28, 2022, a planned basketball meeting in a Lynchburg Salvation Army parking lot ended in gunfire and the death of 33-year-old Estevez Marez Cabell, known as Stevie. Cabell and 25-year-old Malik Ray-Shawn McDaniel met to play but instead argued; witnesses and surveillance show McDaniel produced a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and fired about six shots, striking Cabell in the chest and arms. Cabell was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital and was pronounced dead.
Police identified McDaniel as the primary suspect, described him as armed and dangerous, and located him the next day at a Georgia Avenue residence after a brief standoff. Investigators recovered a 9mm handgun at the scene that was linked to the shooting.
What details about that evening or these two men might help explain how a planned game turned deadly?
