In the early morning hours of June 6, 2022, officers responded to reports of shots fired at the Brookdale Apartments on North Beauregard Street in Alexandria, Virginia. They found 24-year-old Hispanic male Jonathan Cruz Villafuerte with a gunshot wound to his upper body; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting was the fourth homicide in Alexandria that year.

Police identified Jonathan’s younger brother, 22-year-old Enoc Cruz Villafuerte, as the suspect. Enoc was arrested at the apartment and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony; he was held without bond at the William Truesdale Adult Detention Center. The motive was initially under investigation.

Court filings later stated Enoc was intoxicated and said Jonathan tried to grab a .380-caliber rifle kept under the sofa where Enoc slept; Enoc admitted firing the gun and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and the firearm charge, exposing him to a prison term of five to 40 years plus a mandatory three years for the weapon offense. If anyone has information about Jonathan or the events that night, please share what is known.
