On June 1, 2022, officers in Lynchburg, Virginia, found 25-year-old Anthony Dewayne Colden II inside an upstairs apartment at 4540 Golf Park Drive with a gunshot wound to his torso. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene and investigators treated the case as a homicide, asking the public for any security or doorbell camera footage from the area.

More than a month later, on July 15, 2022, police arrested 22-year-old Londell Thompson, Jr. on charges that initially included second-degree murder, malicious shooting, and felony child abuse. In January 2025, Thompson pleaded guilty after charges were amended when witness testimony changed; the second-degree murder charge was reduced to voluntary manslaughter and malicious shooting was amended to unlawful shooting.
