Lewis Jovon Rumley, 42, was shot and killed in a parking lot on Blackberry Road in Bassett, Virginia, on the evening of November 20, 2021. Deputies arrived about five minutes after a call at 8:18 p.m. and found Rumley with at least one gunshot wound to his torso; he was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Western District of Virginia.

Rumley was the owner of L. J. Rumley Trucking Company and an active member of the Flaming Knights Motorcycle Club, described as a devoted father and church member. Investigators say he had arranged to meet an acquaintance that night; both men exited their vehicles and a shot was fired. Authorities identified 20-year-old Dewayne Euvonne Austin Jr. of Martinsville as the primary suspect, obtained warrants charging him with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and say he turned himself in on November 21, 2021.

What did anyone in Bassett see or hear that night that could shed light on why this meeting ended in violence?
