On the evening of November 17, 2021, gunfire in the 300 block of Forest Pine Road in Franklin, Virginia, left 18-year-old Tazman Ahmad Banks dead from a fatal gunshot wound. A second man was shot that night and was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries reported as survivable.
Police arrested 26-year-old Kevin Megal Rooks of Franklin in connection with the shooting. He was charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony and held without bond at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail. At a December 13, 2021 bond hearing Rooks’ attorney described the incident as a home invasion confrontation rather than a malicious act; that defense later led to a not guilty verdict at trial.
What details about that night or the people involved might help explain how the situation escalated to deadly violence?
