A sudden, unprovoked attack at the Pentagon transit center killed 37-year-old Pentagon Police Officer George Gonzalez on the morning of August 3, 2021. The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. on a bus platform when 27-year-old Austin William Lanz of Georgia ran at Gonzalez and stabbed him in the neck. During the struggle Lanz took Gonzalez’s service weapon. Responding officers engaged Lanz; he was shot and killed at the scene, and Officer Gonzalez was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
Lanz had prior criminal charges in Georgia, including aggravated battery on police, making a terrorist threat, and rioting in a penal institution, and had been released on bond with a condition to undergo a mental health evaluation. He had enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2012 and was administratively separated less than a month later. The FBI led the investigation and said there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Does anyone have eyewitness details or additional information about what happened on the bus platform that morning?
