On a summer evening in Martinsville, Virginia, a verbal dispute escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of 31-year-old Charles Brandon Coleman. The incident occurred Sunday, June 27, 2021, at the Maplewood Apartments. Officers who responded to reports of gunfire found Coleman behind one of the apartment buildings with multiple gunshot wounds; he was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the argument between Coleman and another man became physical, and during the altercation the other individual produced a handgun and shot Coleman multiple times. Law enforcement identified 51-year-old Andre Douglas King of Martinsville as the suspect. On July 1, 2021, King was arrested without incident and charged with First Degree Murder, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and a Probation Violation; he was held at the Martinsville City Jail without bond after the arrest.

If anyone witnessed the confrontation at Maplewood Apartments or has information that could help clarify what led to the shooting, please come forward.
