Raegan Sharnae Chisley, 20, was shot and killed on June 22, 2021, after an altercation in the first block of Berkley Drive in Hampton, Virginia. Emergency responders arrived about 5:56 p.m. and found Chisley lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound; she was taken to a local hospital and later died. She was a junior biomedical sciences major at North Carolina Central University, worked as a chemistry tutor, and belonged to the Minority Association of Pre-medical Students with plans to apply to medical school.

Investigators believed an armed person fled into a nearby residence, prompting a SWAT response; the home was found empty. Police later identified 16-year-old Zakwan Tyler as the suspect and he was taken into custody with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Task Force and the Newport News Police Department. Tyler was charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a juvenile, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony; a jury later found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter and underage possession of a firearm at trial in February 2023.
