Iaisha Theresa James was 37 and a mother of six when she was fatally shot during an overnight domestic altercation in her Chesapeake, Virginia home. The shooting occurred in the early hours of January 2, 2021; Chesapeake police responded to a Lafayette Avenue residence at about 12:43 a.m. for a report of a person shot. Officers heard additional gunfire as they arrived, found a chaotic scene, and pronounced Iaisha James dead. Her adult daughter was wounded and survived after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Police arrested James’s 39-year-old boyfriend, Antonio Lee Sutton, at the scene. Authorities said the shooting resulted from a domestic dispute; Sutton was charged initially with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. His case was tried before a jury and resulted in convictions including first-degree murder, aggravated malicious wounding, abduction, and three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, followed by a sentence of life plus fifty years, with twenty years suspended. The family lost a mother; the adult daughter survived her injuries.
Did anyone in Chesapeake see or hear anything that night on Lafayette Avenue that might shed more light on what happened?
