On the night of December 18, 2020, Cierra A. Kelley, a 33-year-old Black woman from Gloucester, Virginia, was fatally shot in Hampton. Around 11:48 p.m. Kelley and a 41-year-old man were sitting in their vehicle in a parking lot in the 2200 block of West Mercury Boulevard when someone approached and opened fire. The two drove themselves to a local hospital; Kelley later died of her injuries, while the man was treated for non-life-threatening wounds.
Hampton Police identified and arrested Brian Latrell Fayne in connection with the shooting. He was charged with second-degree murder, maiming, shooting into an occupied vehicle, shooting in public, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Kelley’s family described her as devoted to her children and active in her community.
