A fight at a Martinsville house party on the night of November 1, 2020, ended with 23-year-old Jayland Jovan Sandoval Gonzalez shot multiple times in the torso. Gonzalez, born April 6, 1997, in Winston Salem, North Carolina, lived in Martinsville and was described as someone who enjoyed fishing and working on cars. He was taken by a private vehicle to SOVAH Health Martinsville but died of his injuries at the hospital.

Police say the alleged shooter fled the scene but was arrested shortly afterward. Demario Devonte Clark, 27, of Martinsville, was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony; he was being held at the Henry County Jail without bond. An autopsy was scheduled at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Western District of Virginia.
