K-Ron Jahlin Nehemiah Surratt was 14 when he was shot and killed in Emporia, Virginia, in the early hours of September 5, 2020. Officers responding to multiple gunshots in the 200 block of Briggs Street found K-Ron fatally wounded around 2:50 a.m. He was about to start ninth grade and was described as fun-loving, enjoying music and dancing, and protective of his family.
Investigators say K-Ron was not believed to be involved in gang activity and appears to have been an unintended victim caught in crossfire during an ongoing feud between rival groups. The Emporia Police Department, with help from the FBI’s Richmond Area Violent Enterprise Task Force, developed a suspect description of a Black male about 25 or younger who may have been in a black car. A reward for information was announced, originally $5,000 and increased to $10,000 in December 2020 for tips leading to an arrest and conviction.
No public announcement of arrests or charges has been made. Anyone who knew K-Ron or has information about the shooting is asked to come forward.
