Jose I. Escobar Menendez, 24, was found fatally shot on a roadside in Sterling, Virginia, in the early morning hours of July 8, 2020. He lived in Winchester and had traveled about 50 miles to meet someone he had connected with online.
Investigators say Menendez had arranged to meet 21-year-old Gavin C. Collins in the Emerald Point Terrace area. Collins arrived with an accomplice, 22-year-old Joshua M. Hunter. A dispute erupted when Collins and Hunter attempted to rob Menendez; during the robbery Menendez was shot and killed. The two men fled in Menendez’s 2019 Nissan Sentra, which was later recovered in Prince William County. A third person, 24-year-old Handy N. Colindrez, was charged with grand larceny for the theft of the car. Friends raised concerns the killing may have been motivated by Menendez’s sexuality, but law enforcement did not classify motive that way.
Did anyone who knew Jose, or who was in Sterling that night, see or hear anything that could help fill in the timeline?
