Robert Wayne Williams, a 38-year-old white man, was shot and killed in his Bassett, Virginia apartment on the night of June 5, 2020. Deputies responded to a shooting call at an apartment complex on Grace Drive around 10:40 p.m. and found Williams just inside the apartment doorway with multiple gunshot wounds. Life-saving efforts by deputies and the Henry County Department of Public Safety were unsuccessful and Williams was pronounced dead at the scene; the medical examiner later ruled the manner of death a homicide due to gunshot wounds.

Investigators quickly developed leads. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office identified 25-year-old Douglas Hampton Gillespie of Bassett as a person of interest and asked for the public’s help locating him. Other persons of interest were later located, and within the same month Gillespie was arrested in Live Oak County, Texas and charged with second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony; he was to be extradited to Virginia. Authorities also announced that they were seeking two additional suspects, Daniel Fish, 37, and Ashleigh Nicole McCallister, 23, wanted on the same charges.
