Ashley Nicole Berry, 33, was killed on the evening of Thanksgiving, November 28, 2019, in Hopewell, Virginia. Leaving a holiday gathering with her youngest child, Berry reportedly shielded her 5-year-old son with her body when gunfire erupted in the 1000 block of Sunnyside Avenue. First responders found her with serious gunshot wounds; she was taken to a local medical center and then to VCU Medical Center, where she died of her injuries. Berry was a Richmond Fire Department lieutenant and mother of three.

Authorities believed early on that Berry was not the intended target and that the shots were aimed at a neighboring residence. Witnesses described a silver or gold SUV fleeing the scene. In August 2023 a grand jury indicted 30-year-old Darrell Donnell Taylor Jr. of Hopewell on charges including murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, conspiracy to commit murder, and shooting into an occupied building; Taylor was already in custody on unrelated charges. Investigators have not publicly disclosed what led to the indictment.

Did anyone in the community see the described SUV or have information about that night?
