On the evening of June 17, 2019, 26-year-old Tony Dimitri Bruce was shot in the 100 block of Bland Street in Rocky Mount, Virginia. Police arrived after calls of shots fired at about 7:40 p.m. and found Bruce with a gunshot wound; he was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. His death was reported as the town’s first homicide in more than twenty years.

Investigators quickly identified two suspects, siblings from Martinsville. The day after the shooting, Kaniesha Shatae Hannon, 27, and Richard Lee Hannon Jr., 28, were arrested in Axton. Initial charges included two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling against Kaniesha Hannon and a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm against Richard Hannon Jr.; both were held without bond. Authorities said the people involved knew one another and there was no ongoing threat to the public. In May 2021, Richard Lee Hannon Jr. was taken into custody on a homicide warrant after a brief standoff.
