Alexander Mikhail Gusev was 35 when he was killed in the mass shooting at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center on May 31, 2019. He worked nine years as a Right of Way agent for the city’s Public Works department. The shooter, a fellow city employee who had submitted his resignation that morning, entered Building No. 2 and fatally shot twelve people, including Gusev; the shooter was killed in a gunfight with police at the scene.
Originally from Mogilev, Belarus, Gusev moved to the United States on May 31, 2003, and completed a Bachelor of Science in Business Management at Old Dominion University without student loans. Colleagues and friends described him as easy-going with a good sense of humor; he enjoyed volleyball, soccer and surfing. He is survived by his parents and a twin brother.
