On the evening of May 29, 2019, 40-year-old Alvin Rogers Jr. was found dead inside his van on Boggs Road in Painter, Virginia. The Accomack County Sheriff’s Office responded after reports of shots fired around 9:15 p.m. Rogers, an African American man, had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the torso; his vehicle had crashed into a tree and bullet holes were found in the windshield. It appeared he had been attempting to back up when he was shot.

Investigators say the shooting occurred during a meeting arranged to buy marijuana that escalated into a robbery. Authorities identified Bronta Jamar Ames as the shooter; Ames was arrested in August 2019 and charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Two others were implicated: Nyxavier Riekem Snead, 17 at the time, was charged as an accomplice and believed to have been standing at the driver’s side door, and X Zavyon Devour Corbin, also 17 at the time, was charged with attempted robbery.
