A late-night dispute at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on May 2, 2019, ended in gunfire that killed 33-year-old Terrence Jerrell Houston of Newport News. The confrontation began after two groups met to exchange clothing at a local inn and a fistfight between two women escalated. During the melee, 20-year-old Carson Carnell Davis Jr. drew a firearm and opened fire near 11th Street and Pacific Avenue. Houston was struck and died at the scene; a woman with him was also shot and survived with serious, life-altering injuries.

Investigators arrested two people after the shooting. Davis was charged with murder, felonious assault, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Eighteen-year-old Zaymi Nicole Lewis was arrested and charged with being an accessory after the fact and carrying a concealed weapon; a second woman in Davis’s group was not charged because she was found to be unaware Davis was armed.
