On March 16, 2019, 34-year-old Chiquita Monique Giles and her 66-year-old stepfather, Wilbur Giles, were found shot to death inside an apartment on Gateway Drive in Portsmouth, Virginia. Chiquita was a mother of two, Christopher and Cameron, and worked for Portsmouth Public Schools; she was remembered as kind and sweet. Wilbur was a lifelong Portsmouth resident described as quiet and deeply loved by family and friends.
Investigators charged Chiquita’s brother and Wilbur’s stepson, Sheldon Porter, with two counts of first-degree murder. At trial the prosecution introduced a phone call in which Porter allegedly admitted the killings; the defense pointed to a lack of physical evidence such as fingerprints or eyewitnesses at the scene. A jury convicted Porter of two counts of second-degree murder, and on January 13, 2020 he received a 93-year sentence that included 40 years for each murder plus additional time for firearm-related counts.
