Vanessa Zaman was 18 when she was fatally shot in Henrico, Virginia, on December 13, 2018. She and her cousin, 18-year-old Leona Samlall, were walking near an apartment building in Highland Springs when a man approached them, got out of a car and opened fire. The attack has been described as an ambush carried out in a fit of rage.

Authorities identified the suspect as Vanessa’s father, 39-year-old Abdool Zaman. Investigators said the attack was not random and that the man most likely knew the victims; Vanessa had reportedly reconnected with her father the year before her death. After the shooting, a manhunt began and police warned he should be considered armed and dangerous. Abdool Zaman was later captured in New York City with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service and was wanted on warrants for second-degree murder at the time of arrest.

Did anyone in Highland Springs know Vanessa or Leona and observe them the day of the shooting?
