On the afternoon of July 4, 2018, 36-year-old Kelly Phillips was fatally shot on East Pembroke Avenue in Hampton, Virginia. Neighbors say the gunfire sounded around noon and some initially thought it was fireworks. Witnesses saw Phillips banging on a door before she collapsed; she was taken to a local hospital but died of her injuries.
Investigators determined Phillips had been beaten and shot four times. Authorities quickly focused on 62-year-old acquaintance Gregory Ricardo Burwell as the primary suspect. Burwell was arrested the next day, on July 5, and charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, among other counts.
Few public details are available about the altercation that led to the shooting. If anyone in Hampton that day saw or heard anything on East Pembroke Avenue, please come forward with information that could help complete the picture.
