Anthony Joseph Trovata, 32, of Shawsville, was shot once and found in the Go Mart parking lot on West Main Street in Salem on May 8, 2018. He was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and later died of his injuries. A woman named Angela Woolwine was with Trovata at the time of the shooting.

Investigators identified 32-year-old Mark Allen Bell of Roanoke as a suspect. A manhunt led officers to a Days Inn in Christiansburg, where a standoff began around 1:30 a.m. the next morning and lasted about two and a half hours. Bell and 27-year-old Lauren June Leffler of Bedford surrendered without incident at 4:09 a.m. and were taken into custody by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Multiple agencies assisted in the arrest.
