On January 8, 2018, 22-year-old Matthew Dillon Jyrkinen was killed at an apartment on Gate Tree Court in Virginia Beach during a methamphetamine deal that turned violent. The confrontation reportedly began over the weight of the drugs and escalated to gunfire; 28-year-old Michael Allen Cain was also found dead and a woman suffered life-threatening injuries. Police arrived around 5 p.m. and discovered the scene.
An investigation led to the arrest of four men: Dale Edward Gauvin, then 22; Steven Larry Gray, 35; Malkim Shamarr Hart, 29; and Justin Travis Rigby, 33. The four faced charges including robbery, conspiracy, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and aggravated malicious wounding. Hart was later charged with two counts of first-degree murder while Gauvin, Gray, and Rigby were charged with two counts of second-degree felony homicide. Some charges against Gauvin were dismissed in January 2019, and Rigby entered a guilty plea to possession with intent to distribute and conspiracy with other charges dropped.
Were there witnesses or local details about Gate Tree Court that might help clarify who supplied the drugs or how the dispute began?
