On November 18, 2017, in Henrico, Virginia, 15-year-old Jaishaun Williams was fatally shot inside his family’s home on Fayette Circle after intervening while his mother, Renita Wells, was being attacked. Renita Wells died at the scene; Jaishaun was taken to a hospital and later succumbed to his injuries. The shooting occurred after Renita had told relatives she feared her husband, and on the night of the killings she placed a 911 call reporting that her husband was behaving strangely; a struggle can be heard on that call before the line went dead.

Less than an hour after the killings, police stopped Derrell Williams following a high-speed chase on Interstate 64; his vehicle spun out and he tried to run, and officers found a handgun and cocaine in the car. Authorities said they were not seeking any other suspects. In November 2018 Derrell Williams pleaded guilty to the murders, including a capital murder count covering both Renita and Jaishaun and a first-degree murder charge for Jaishaun’s death.
