On September 22, 2017, 58-year-old Kenneth Starnes and his 80-year-old mother, Nancy Starnes, were found shot to death inside their home on Ennisdale Drive in Isle of Wight, Virginia. Relatives discovered signs of forced entry after they could not reach the pair and called deputies. Investigators concluded a .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol had been used and described the incident as a home invasion that became a double murder.

Evidence led to two nearby men, Kareem Mitchell and Richard Holmes, who were linked to other burglaries in the area. Stolen property from the Starnes home, including televisions, credit cards and firearms, was recovered; one stolen vehicle was found at the home of Mitchell’s half-sister, Sharon Galvin. Police also recovered 14 stolen guns on Galvin’s property, some belonging to the Starnes. Mitchell and Holmes cooperated and pleaded guilty; Mitchell received two life terms plus additional time for related offenses. Galvin was charged with conspiracy, obstruction and receiving stolen property, and a 17-year-old at her address was detained on gun and stolen-property charges.

Prosecutors said the murders were likely not premeditated but the result of a burglary gone wrong, while family members said the victims may have been targeted because both were disabled and appeared vulnerable. Does anyone have information about the Starnes family or the neighborhood around Ennisdale Drive that could add context to what happened?
