Phineas Rufus Neville, 28, also known to some as Ebony Morgan, was shot multiple times at an apartment complex on Rivermont Avenue in Lynchburg, Virginia, during the early hours of July 2, 2017. Emergency services took him to Lynchburg General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators eventually identified a person of interest and arrested 22-year-old Kenneth Allen Kelley Jr. Authorities say Kelley met with Neville to sell drugs; a physical fight broke out during the transaction and Kelley shot Neville five times. Neville’s mother, Freda Neville, spoke publicly about her grief and said she felt a surprising measure of forgiveness toward the man accused, though the motive remained unclear to her.
Kenneth Allen Kelley Jr. later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and to using a firearm in the commission of a felony and received a 20-year prison sentence.
