Samuel Turner Dawson was 55 when he was fatally shot in Gladys, Virginia, on December 30, 2016. The shooting prompted an immediate local investigation into what happened that late December day.

Investigators arrested Jeremiah T. S. Anderson and charged him initially with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony; he was held without bond. Prosecutors later upgraded the murder charge to first-degree murder. Court proceedings concluded with Anderson convicted in connection with Dawson’s death and sentenced to 38 years in prison.
