On the evening of December 17, 2016, 50-year-old Christopher Jon Miller of Bridgewater, Virginia, was fatally shot at his fiancée’s home on Morris Mill Road in Augusta County. Deputies say Miller was struck during a confrontation in the living room and died before law enforcement arrived.

Augusta County investigators identified 36-year-old Christopher Luke Simmons of Staunton as the suspect. Simmons reportedly forced his way into the residence, lay in wait for the couple, and then confronted them armed with a firearm. He was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony; he was held without bond and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for May 2, 2017.
