Zacarias Aguilar-Ayala, 34, was found dead inside his truck in the 1300 block of Hawk Avenue in Virginia Beach on December 2, 2016. Police responded to a 7:41 p.m. call; he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators linked the killing to a series of shootings in the area between November 29 and December 7, 2016. Authorities allege two teenagers drove through neighborhoods and opened fire at people at random; testimony says Angelo Antonio Worlds, 17, exited a vehicle at Tapo Mobile Park and shot Aguilar-Ayala with a gun belonging to Nicholas Isaiah Cates, 18. Worlds reportedly told police he had been high on Xanax and shot because Aguilar-Ayala was the only person on the street.
The attack left a community shaken as it formed part of a multi-day shooting spree that resulted in two deaths and several injuries. If anyone saw activity in the Hawk Avenue area on the evening of December 2, or has information about the shootings, please come forward.
