Matthew Jerome Short, 47, was shot on the evening of November 9, 2016, in Charlottesville and died of his wound on November 11, 2016. Investigators later arrested and charged his father, 84-year-old Donald T. Short Sr., a former University of Virginia police officer; the original malicious wounding charge was elevated to second-degree murder after Matthew’s death.
The killing was noted as Albemarle County’s first murder in more than a year. Matthew Short’s family held a celebration of his life on November 15, 2016; he was remembered as a Radford University graduate and is survived by his daughter, parents, siblings, and other relatives. The motive for the shooting was not made public.
