Maurice Anderson Berger was 17 when he was found suffering from a gunshot wound on a sidewalk in the 9700 block of Hagel Circle in Lorton, Virginia, on the night of September 7, 2016. Emergency responders arrived around 10:30 p.m., but Berger was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a student at Bryant Alternative High School and participated in the AV/Tech team and Multicultural Book Club; classmates remembered him as positive, helpful and respectful.
Initial police reports said witnesses heard gunshots and saw a vehicle leave the scene. Fairfax County later concluded Berger was shot during an attempted robbery that he and two others were carrying out. According to investigators, the intended robbery target, an 18-year-old from Manassas Park, shot Berger; prosecutors determined the shooting was self-defense and did not charge the shooter. Daniel Winkfield, 18, was charged with robbery in connection with the incident and was awaiting trial.
Did anyone in Lorton or at Bryant Alternative High School have information about Berger’s activities or the events that night?
